The Nana's Scarf Story

It all began on December 19th, 2001. My Nana passed away. She lived in London where I was born and raised. Our family flew back there the same day. She had lived in the same flat for over 30 years. When I was a child I remember Friday night dinners, and the memory of being able to smell her cooking from the hall way of the Flats.

I took a few items from the flat to be passed down to my son when he was older. Little mementos he could pass down to his children and so on. One of the items was a scarf. Not an expensive scarf, but it was Nana's scarf, and that was all that mattered to me.

In 2004 my daughter was born, a lovely surprise, and by the end of the year 2005 I was trying to think of something special to do for my mum's birthday....and this is how we began. I took the scarf that had belonged to my Nana and took it to a friend of mine who does embroidery. On the top I had her embroider “Nana's Scarf”, as my mum was now Nana to my children, and under that put my mums name and the year. I brought a Journal and wrote in it how much she means to me.I wanted this scarf and journal to be passed down generation to generation. As each of the women in our family became a Nana our names would be added to the scarf and something would be written in the journal about us, by our children. Our grand children, great grand children would know who we were and we would not be forgotten.

My son won't remember my Nana and my daughter was born after she passed. But no matter what, as time passes and each of our names are added , eventually mine, then my daughters and so on, and the scarf is passed down generation to generation no matter whose name is embroidered it will always be....

Nana's Scarf

As it is too difficult to have customers send their scarfs back in 10 to 20 years to add names as each becomes a Nana or grandma, I changed the format and decided to do the Mum's scarf and list her children's names, along with Nana's/Grandma's scarf and list the grandchildren names. For Great Grandma's we list all the great grandchildren names. For the Aunt's scarf we can list all the nieces and nephews. For the Sister's scarf we can list all the sisters names.

We also have In Memoriam Scarves

I always see the decals on the back windows of cars. I feel that people want to remember and show the importance of loved ones that have been lost. Whether in war, September 11th 2001, illness or from a tragic accident, this scarf can be worn with pride and in remembrance so these important lives will not be forgotten.
